Count channels, then add room

The range runs from 4 channels to 128. Specify for the cameras you will have in two years, not the ones going up this week — adding a camera to a full recorder means replacing the recorder. The 4- and 8-channel mini models suit a house or a small unit. The 16- and 32-channel models cover most commercial installs. The 64- and 128-channel models are for multi-building sites and are sized accordingly.

PoE ports are not the same as channels

A 32-channel recorder with 16 PoE ports records 32 cameras but powers 16. The rest need a separate PoE switch or local supply. Check both numbers. Then check the PoE budget in watts, not just the port count — cameras with white light, speakers or heaters draw considerably more than a plain IR camera, and a fully populated switch can run out of power long before it runs out of ports.

Storage is set by drive bays

The mini models take a single drive. The 1.5U and 2U models take up to 8, and the 3U models up to 16. Retention depends on channel count, resolution, frame rate and how much of the day is actually recorded, so work out the requirement before choosing the chassis — a recorder with the right channel count and too few bays is an expensive thing to discover after installation.

AI models move the work off the cameras

The AI recorders run detection centrally, which lets you use simpler cameras and keeps rules in one place. Non-AI models rely on detection at the camera. Either approach works; mixing them without planning is what causes trouble. Confirm which side is doing the analysis before you order either half of the system.
